It has now been a little over two years since I first posted a piece of flash fiction on Substack. It doesn’t really seem like that long, but here we are. In that time, I’ve done a lot of writing, most of it novels. Some short fiction and a few essays. A lot of it has never seen the light of day.
I’ve also made quite a few friends on here, and gained a few loyal readers, and for that, I remain forever thankful.
I have also spent a lot of time floundering, especially with respect to genre. I plan to continue doing that. Floundering is vital for creatives, but we also need to communicate what we are doing to potential fans and readers.
That is what this is an attempt to do. Establish a baseline for what I write. Now that I even have an idea of what I want to write. As such, the Pulp Vitalist has been renamed to Pulp West. I think this is more in line with where my writing is headed, and probably serves as a better touchstone for what I’m doing.
While I love sci-fi and the occasional military thriller, I continuously find myself writing westerns, reading westerns, watching westerns, and researching westerns. As such, I’ve decided to lean into that going forward.
That’s not to say I won’t write other things. For example, I’ll be reviewing a lot of Hardboiled fiction coming up.
But it is to say, that I think I found my baseline genre and subsequently my baseline audience.
Yours,
Frank Kidd
P.S. A new short story will be out next week.
Are you familiar with Go West Magazine? They just closed submissions for their second issue but they are publishing some cool western fiction. I have a 10 page western comic in their next issue. Gowestmag.com
I'm with you on the western addiction. I've written 2 short story westerns in a row, and one of my current (although temporarily dormant) serials is a western.
